No middle between the right and left

How often have we heard our candidates promise better working relationships between the left and the right?  Is this a good thing?  Is it practical?

These two groups have very different philosophies about governing that don't mesh.  Conservatives believe in the individual and in the groups they freely join; liberals believe individuals left to their own will destroy themselves.  Conservatives believe that government's role should be limited to those problems people cannot solve on their own.  Liberals believe that government should take an active role in all aspects of people's lives.  Conservatives believe in opportunity and risk; liberals believe in entitlement and welfare.  There is no middleground:  especially for conservative ideals.  For when we give government new roles in our lives, we forever lose the freedom to solve those problems ourselves.
